FAQ

  • Is it possible to ask the helper to carry out tasks outside my home?
Yes, you can request the helper to handle tasks such as purchasing daily necessities, picking up and dropping off children for classes, caring for family members and children during meals out, washing the car, and delivering food or personal items to the employer or their family members outside the home. These activities are considered incidental to household chores.
  • How is the amount of sickness allowance calculated? And when should it be paid?
In the first year of the contract, 2 days of paid sick leave can be accumulated for each month of work. Thereafter, 4 days of paid sick leave can be accumulated for each month of work, with a maximum accumulation of 120 days. The daily amount of sickness allowance is equivalent to four-fifths of the domestic helper’s average daily wage. Employers must pay the sickness allowance to the domestic helper no later than the regular payday.
  • What is the current income requirement for families employing domestic helpers?
For each domestic helper employed, the employer’s household income must be at least HK$15,000 per month, or the employer must have equivalent assets to cover the entire employment contract period. Generally, if elderly parents apply to hire a domestic helper, the Immigration Department may consider accepting financial proof provided by their children to support the application.
